Pepe winery was established at the end of the nineteenth century, when Emidio Pepe, grandfather of the current owner, found in the hills of Torano the ideal habitat for the two main grapes of Abruzzo: Trebbiano and Montepulciano. Already in 1944 his son Giuseppe was known in the whole area for the quality of his bulk wine. Twenty years later his nephew Emidio inherited the land and the knowledge to elevate Trebbiano and Montepulciano to the test of the bottle, so much that the winery in Torano Nuovo will be described by the great Mario Soldati. Since 1964 Pepe winery has become a symbol of territorial expression and longevity, thanks to the untiring activity of Emidio and his wife Rosa. Since some time also daughters Daniela and Sofia, with the contribution of their granddaughter Chiara, are putting into practice the secrets learned by their parents in order to keep intact the viticultural heritage of the winery, following the way of organic farming before it was certified by an institutional stamp or became a fashion. Today Pepe winery has gradually passed from the organic method to the biodynamic one: Emidio, thanks to 50 years of harvesting behind him, has been able to perfectly regulate plant nutrition, soil working, pruning and vine vegetation, limiting any kind of intervention in the vineyard and in the winery. The 15 hectares of Emidio Pepe's properties are located in a breathtaking landscape, with the sea just few kilometers away and Gran Sasso at the back, with clayey and calcareous soils and a ventilated microclimate with good temperature range. No invasive products are used, no selected yeasts are used to trigger the alcoholic fermentation and no enzymes are added to favor the genesis of aromas. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, in fact, only natural products such as copper crystals, mine sulfur and biodynamic preparations are used. This is the philosophy the Pepe family applies step by step in the process which leads to the production of its wine, always vinified in cement and aged without using wood casks in the cellar. Emidio Pepe is a great family business that over the years has been able to maintain a constant and absolutely impeccable production quality, succeeding in every vintage to represent the terroir and the charm of Abruzzo in every bottle.
